Choosing A Knife Sharpener

A very good knife sharpener is quite handy whether you’re a sushi chef slicing thin slivers of fish or you are an art student snipping bits of paper into a complex collage. Not only does a knife sharpener makes knifes much easier to use, but your work, whether cooking or artwork, is bound to end up looking much better. A dull blade only adds to the degree of difficulty and worse, could end up ruining your work. Some people may think that a dull blade is safer than a sharp one, but a dull blade exposes you to higher risks of getting cut or injured. So do not be afraid to get yourself a very good knife sharpener if you are going to spend a lot of time in the kitchen or doing  art work. These are but a few examples of the types of sharpening tools to consider.

First, do you prefer a hand operated sharpener or an electric sharpener? Some people the hand operated sharpener due to the level of control it gives. Others go for the convenience and so choose the elecric sharpener. Both will give good results, it is just a matter of personal preference. Of course if have difficulty using your hands or experience pain when doing certain tasks and your preference is the hand sharpener, you may want to give one a try first.

One advantage of using a hand knife sharpener is that you have considerably more control over the blade. It’s a bit more time consuming, but many see this as a necessary part of the sharpening process. Typical hand sharpeners are made from a variety of different materials. There are different sharpening materials for different types of knive blades. Some have a thick leather strip, while others have stones or ceramic as the sharpening agent. For light sharpening, the sharpener may consist of a steel sharpening sheet or strip.

While sharpening a blade by hand has its advantages, there is something to be said about the efficiency of an electric knife sharpener. This involves simply inserting the knife blade into the sharpening chamber and let the machine do the work. Many sharpening devices come with a pre-sharpening chamber that serves to clean the blade and remove small grooves and flecks that results from frequent use. Once the blade is smooth and polished again, the real sharpening begins.

Unlike hand sharpening methods, it is sometimes difficult to observe just how much sharpening you’ve done without checking the blade frequently. However, if you use your knives on a regular basis and want a fast, easy way to keep them properly honed, an electric knife sharpener is an ideal addition to any kitchen or workshop.

So which type of knife sharpener is more favorable? This depends on many things, such as the type of blades being sharpened, their overall condition, and the different materials used. You may find that hand sharpening your blade with a quality stone is enough to keep them really sharp, or you may decide that an electric sharpener is more convenient. So it comes down to a mix of personal taste, your particular situation and the the type of blades you sharpen from time to time.
