Home-Based Business — Do You Have What It Takes?

    August 4th, 2010

Operating a business can be a real challenge and a home-based business in particular has its own unique challenges associated with running it. Before you venture out to start operating a home-based business, maybe a very good question to honestly ask yourself is, do I have what it takes?

The following are some critical questions you should be addressing before you venture out into a home-based business. These are questions particularly concerned with your own temperament.

    * Are You Well Organized?

Being well organized is a critical aspect of running a business from home given the interruptions you are likely to face and the lack of administrative support when just starting out.

    * Are You Focused?

Working from home is going to pose a challenge with regards to being able to focus on your business and not get caught up with whatever else is going on in the home. If you are not able to stay focused on what your business require from day to day and allow minor interruptions in the home to take up your time, then you are going to find it very difficult to reach your goals and be successful.

    * Do You Normally Take The Initiative?

One of the disadvantages of running a home based business is that you have little or no support with regards to feed-back and motivation. In this regards you have to be prepared even more than is normal to take the initiative to get things done. You will not have the support of colleagues, unless you have managed to develop an effective network to help along this line, but even then the initiative to even ask for help will have to come from you.

    * Do You Have An Abundance of Energy?

We may feel that working from home makes our job easier as there is no commute and less office politics and corporate stress. While this may be true to some extent, you would be surprised to know how those very same things give us energy to get up every day and perform. We may not like commuting but when we know we have to get to that office to meet a deadline with a boss on our backs, that energy level spikes up.

Working from your home you will not have the same motivations. So you need to plan carefully how you are going to keep your energy levels up in order to get your work done.

Running a home-based business can be extremely rewarding, but if you are going to make a success of it you will need to ensure that you do have what it takes before making that full commitment.

Evaluating Online Business Tools – A Systematic Approach

    July 6th, 2010

If you are going to be doing business online you are going to be bombarded by offers and hype and all kinds of tools promising the stars in the sky. And if you are going to be successful you will have to find a way to systematically examine some of these and know which one is right for you. Here is a systematic approach to evaluating any online business tools presented to you.

    1. First you need to establish online business strategies and goals for every online venture you are involved with. Do you need products, or traffic, what type of traffic, do you need an auto-responder service, do you need web hosting. Establish what your requirements are for each online venture.
    2. Once you have established these requirements and documented them, try to drill down further on the characteristics of these requirements. The more specific you get the more clarity you will have. For example, you may need web hosting, but not just any host, you need certain free tools, certain operating software, the capacity to handle certain procedures. Try and get as specific as you can.
    3. Your list of requirements will form the basis for a decision on what to check out and what to just bypass. This alone will save you a tremendous amount of time. But you want to do more than merely save time, you do not want to waste money buying tools that cannot help your business. Not to mention saving yourself the frustration from something not working. So you will evaluate the tool against your requirements. Pull up everything you have on that tool, the marketing material such as the sales page, reviews, comments, testimonials.
    4. Now its time to do the hard work. In this step your objective is to determine the outputs or capabilities of the tool being presented to you. Go through the sales letter, and any other documentation you may have and write down the capabilities or functionality of the tool. Do not focus on the benefits. That is just for the sales pitch and you are not into that. Focus what it can actually do. Write down each capability.
    5. Your next step is to determine how these capabilities identified in 4) are executed or fulfilled. Do you have to get another tool for this thing to work? Will it work in the environment in which your business is run? Do you have to subscribe to a service to get access to it?
    6. If step 5 leave you in any doubt about how this tool can address your requirements, either bypass it or get back to the vendor with your questions. You certainly should not be getting anything that you do not have the confidence is gong to work for you.
    7. The final step, assuming that you have decided that this is a tool that will benefit your business, is to determine if it is worth the cost given what it can definitely deliver. This is more of a subjective decision and one that you will just have to be comfortable with given your circumstances.

Doing business online can be a challenge, but with a systematic approach to most things you have to do your chances of success can be increased significantly.

How I Stopped Chasing Online Business Opportunities

    July 5th, 2010

Chasing online business opportunities is one of the most debilitating things you can ever do.  I must confess that for a time, maybe too long, I was one of those who chased business opportunity after business opportunity. It got to the point where there were so many e-books, reports, software sitting on my computer that I just become overwhelmed. I don’t know at what point I decided that enough was enough, but I know I reached a point where I wouldn’t even read sales letters any more, wouldn’t read e-mails from marketers and just restrained my online activity to personal stuff. In fact, I know I had to take a break from trying to run an online business and maybe stay away from that stuff for a while. I did just that.

But I also know that if I wanted to resume my online activities as far as pursuing business opportunities, I would have to make some radical changes to how I operated. The change would have to be fast and deep. I just could not go back online and continue with the practices that had brought me so much frustration.  So what did I do? I decided to sit down and examine the actions I was taking online, what were my motivations, what impact these were having on what I was trying to achieve businesswise. What was the end result? A book written primarily for myself outlining the processes that made it possible for me to quit chasing business opportunities.

This is how I was able to free myself from some of the destructive habits we all engage in online – chasing opportunities, reading sales pitch after sales pitch, buying useless e-books, software and reports.  After going through the whole process, which lasted over a week, I could not believe the damage I was doing to myself and how I was in fact sabotaging my own efforts online.

Today, my online activities are more focused. I have developed a system to evaluate tools and opportunities that are in keeping with my own business goals and strategies. I no longer allow “salesmen” in the form of e-mails to come barging through my office door to make sales presentation at their whim. Of course I would not allow this with a brick and mortar business so why should I allow this with my online business. It is counterproductive and extremely disruptive.

If you are caught in the same situation I found myself in two years ago – chasing business opportunity after business opportunity, then you really should stop and evaluate what you are doing online. Because the truth is you can never be productive or even successful with this approach. You need to examine a lot of stuff about you that may not be pleasant at first but in the end will get you off of this business opportunity chasing roller-coaster.

Your Home Business Success Starts With Your Passion

    June 21st, 2010

In whatever career you may find yourself in, there is no such thing as “information overload.” Know as much as you can, do what others do, and what the entire company does. Equip yourself with a total knowledge of your work environment, enough to make you feel like you own the network. Who knows, you may someday.

Walking an extra mile, being organized at work, honesty, trust-worthiness, dependability, being a team player, loyalty, and resourcefulness are the must-be characteristics of your passion.

Are you the type of worker who is always looking forward to Monday morning? Or you are the type of worker who’s pleading and hoping that it will always be Friday the other day? There are workers who are called TGIF workers? What is TGIF? TGIF stands for Thank God It’s Friday. TGIF workers can’t wait for their minimum of 8 hours a day to finish. If you classify yourself as a TGIF worker, then you are certainly lacking something or missing something important in your career life – passion.

What does it take to be passionate in your job? There is always that old maxim “Do what you love the most.” A passionate worker always has the appetite to go to work every day. He or she doesn’t mind if it’s Monday or Friday. He or she treats everyday as an important day in his or her career life. What do you think is the result of being a passionate in your career life? When you are passionate in your job, you enjoy it and even seek for more. There is always the idea in your mind that you can always do better than that. You are not satisfied to mediocre work. And it pays to be a passionate worker not because you will be accelerated into higher position nor you will be given extra compensation, but because you can get things done in your work with a sense of appreciation.

In your work as an entrepreneur at home, you got to have extra passion. Why do you need it? You might be asking. Take this for an instance; can you able to sit a little longer whenever a meeting comes? Can you stay a little longer if you’re transacting some business matters to a customer that asks too many questions? In short, can you be patient enough but maintaining the passion in you? You can be energetic enough in your work but it demands greater than that. Still, you need passion in your work.

So, what separates a passionate worker to a worker that only minds work?

People who practice passion in their work always perform their work at their best. They always strive for perfection in everything. They see perfection as unattainable in most things. But their eagerness drive them much nearer to it than those whose laziness and despondency make them give it up as an imperfection. Passionate workers put extra care in their work and they aren’t satisfy for anything less.

At this point you might be asking either one or more of the following questions:
    1. Do I need passion even though my work is just a home business?
    2. To whom will I use passion?
    3. What will passion do for me? What is its impact in my performance?
    4. How may I know my passion?

The last question on the list is very interesting. In one way or the other, passion creates a difference in terms of performance between a passionate worker and the other. What do you like the most? What are your interests? What type of job do you enjoy the most? The answers to these questions vary depending on the personality of a worker. But whatever will it be, if you can answer the questions then that will be your checklist on how you may know your passion. Each worker has different passion. One’s passion is not the same with the other. Your job as a home business representative takes a little talking to different people. If you found that your passion is more on communication, then you are really entitled for the home business. If you like to deal with different people and enjoy front liner’s job, you are really suited for the home business.
