There can be no doubt model trains are huge fun. For beginners the initial hurdle is deciding upon a model train scale . Generally what you plan to do with it will help you determine what you should get . Yes , there is a measurement for almost every occasion – from micro to lunchbox size. I want to look at the biggest and the mini-ones and what they’re good for. In respect to model trains for beginners, the most prevalent scale is HO scale, but let us look at two other popular model scales.

G Scale Model Trains
This measurement of model train is typically referred to as garden scale and it is the grandest commercially available measurement for trains . G scale trains are traditionally meant to be used outside and this is the most appropriate location for them. You need a whole lot of space if you want to create a layout indoors because the trains take up as much space as a lunchbox .

  • These model trains are made to handle weather – they may not be the most pleasing to look at – but they are tough . What really make them good for outdoor uses are the brass tracks . Brass can stand up to bad weather and you simply have to wipe them off and go.
  • Perfect for parks, gardens or any mid-sized outdoor space.
  • Great for children because children love them and you don’t need to constantly fret about them being broken ; they can survive young hands.

T Scale Trains
T scale trains are for individuals who like things really, really miniscule. A train in this measurement is pretty much smaller than your thumb. This is a micro scale and the smallest commercially available model train size. Be warned, yes they are as cute as a button, but a sneeze will derail them, dust will stop them and any grade of hill more than a tiny slope will bring them to a halt.

  •  Cute beyond belief.
  • You can fit an entire model train layout in a briefcase (do a Google image search and see for yourself).
  •  Fussy, fussy, fussy – it is very hard to keep the trains running even under optimal conditions.

There are many, many different scales in between G scale and T scale trains and a few hybrid and/or custom scales for those who like to make their own stuff. The most important thing to remember when going shopping is that international measurements vary quite a bit. If you buy something in the U.K. or Europe , don’t expect it to work with something made in North America.
