Starting A Home-Based Business? – Consider These Issues

March 7th, 2010
Home Office #1

Having a home-based business is an extremely attractive proposition for many people.  A home-based business gives you options you would not otherwise have as an employee – being  your own boss, not having to commute, the freedom to choose your working hours freely, and to be able to plan the work-day entirely on your own.

If you are considering starting your own home-based business, then you should give some considerations to the following:

1. If I am going to keep my current job, at least as a starter, when will I find the time to build my home-based business? How many hours each day can I put aside and use for my business endeavors? Can I work early in the morning or late evenings? Maybe at the weekends?

2. Do I have a suitable room or place for my home business? Can I work uninterrupted? Would my home-based business in any way affect my neighbors?

3. How much energy and determination am I willing to put into learning something new, if required? Even if the basic direction of my home based business  is something that I already know of and master, then: How about the management of the home business itself? Should I delegate some or any chores, like the book-keeping?

4. Do I have the support of the people who are significant in my life? Can I rely on my spouse and family to be totally supportive?

5. How will I fund my startup and operational costs? How much am I willing to risk in this business? If this business should fail or turn out to be less profitable than anticipated, will this ruin my finances?

These are but a few critical issues one needs to consider before starting a home-based business, but in and of themselves, they are extremely important to any long term success. Be sure to be honest in your answers and come up with working documents from your deliberations as these will help you in further planning.

Adware, Spyware and Viruses

January 15th, 2010
Dozens of pop-up ads covering a desktop.
Image via Wikipedia

There are some similarities between Adware, Spyware and computer viruses. The main one of course is the level of danger or annoyance they pose for our computers.  But let’s look at the three in some detail.

Spyware is software that does not intentionally harm your computer. What they do is create pathways wherein someone else aside from the computer owner can communicate with the computer. Normally spywares record the various types of web sites you visit which are later used by web advertisers to allow them to send you unwanted emails and pop-ups.  But spyware can also extract valuable and private information from your computer. This is the main reason why spyware should be greatly avoided and steps taken immediately to remove any spyware from your computer if you suspect any has been installed there.

Basically Spyware are executable programs which allow them to record keystrokes, scan files on your hard disks and even query other applications that you use including but not limited to chat programs, cookies and Web browser settings.

The spyware can then send the information gathered to another computer that is accessible by others. The information collected can be used for a wide array of purposes from advertising to even fraud.

Adware, on the other hand, are less dangerous than spyware and can even have some form of legitimacy. Similar to spyware however, adwares are packaged into a software or program and are usually installed automatically as a result of some online activity or even through the installation of other programs.  As the name suggests, Adware is mainly concerned with showing ads on your computer, most of the time without your permission.

Some signs of spyware and adware infections are pop-up ads that seem to be not related to the site you are viewing. Another indication that you have spyware or adware on your computer is a very slow computer for no apparent reason. Whether it is adware or spyware, you want to take actions to protect your computer. There are several tools out there to help you do this. For a full review of some of these types of tools go to Adware Reviews or Spyware Reviews.

Of the three,  viruses are the most destructive form of software. Viruses are  purely designed and created for one purpose only -  to wreak havoc on your computer system. Once your computer is infected any number of damages can be inflicted, from damage to your files or deletion of files to taking over some functions completely such as the sending of e-mails. Virus normally replicate from computer to computer mainly through e-mails or file sharing.

Quite a number of  anti-virus software have been developed to detect and stop viruses from infecting your computer. Some provide utilities to scan and remove spyware and adware. However the more useful ones are more focused at identifying and removing computer viruses or stopping them before they can do any damage to your computer system.

There are some actions you can take to guard yourself against viruses. One obvious one is do not open e-mails from unknown senders. Another is to not download any files from sites you do not trust or from e-mails. Even if you think you can trust the sender of an e-mail that has an attached file or you are sure about the safety of a site you are downloaded  a file from, it is always a good idea to scan these files for viruses.

There are a number of really good tools that allow you to guard yourself against viruses and you should plan to invest in at least one as soon as possible. To see a full review of virus detection and removal tools, visit Virus Control Reviews.

Reduce Anxiety Now

December 30th, 2009

Here are a few quick ways to reduce mild anxiety.

1.  Try to freshen up your surroundings. Use odors such as apple and cucumber. These have been shown in studies to have a positive impact on the emotional center of the brain.

2. Get a quick massage. Massage has been shown to reduce the effects of cortisol, a hormone that can actually damage body tissue if it is produced at excessive levels.

3. Do jumping jacks. In fact any light aerobic exercise will quickly improve your mood and help with circulation.

4. Phone a friend, but do not talk about your anxiety. Talk about something that will make them excited and happy. Excitement and happiness are contagious.

Though anxiety is a very complex phenomenon, simple steps like these can help in managing this condition.

Affirming Away The Blues

September 13th, 2009

Affirmation is a great tool to get rid of your blues.

Even when you do not know why you are feeling blue or down, one great approach is to just let go.

Here is an example of a great affirmation to immediately change your emotional state.

“I let go and I trust”.

This works for a number of reasons. One, there is always something that you are holding on to that is resulting in negative feelings. Letting go and affirming that you trust yourself to do so is a powerful statement to your subconscious about your own will. Two, trusting as simple as it may sound is not so easy for most of us. Just being able to say it in a way that you believe gives a powerful boost to self-confidence. If you are self-confident of course it becomes harder and harder to feel the blues.

Affirmations should always be voiced in positive terms and in the present tense. In other words, say what you are doing, not what you would like to do or what you will do or for that matter what you do not want. Say what you want in a present tense format. So the affirmation “I let go and trust” is not only in the present tense but is positive.

Another great strategy to use with affirmations is simply say it loud and keep it short. Loud does not mean noise of course but with enough sound to make an audible impact in the environment you are in.

Finally, affirmations should always be done often enough to make an impact over time, so if possible at least twice per day.

If you are that type of person who loves wine in every meal, then this is the article for you. Whenever you are confronted with a variety of wine bottles in your neighborhood shop, sometimes, you tend to let go of the thought of purchasing because you can’t determine which is which. There are wines that came from foreign countries with names you can’t even read.

Sometimes, these types of wines are those that taste exquisite and therefore shouldn’t be taken for granted just because of your lack of understanding. Sometimes, you tend to choose something that you have already drank and swore never to drink again.  In order to determine that a wine tastes as good as it looks, you have to know 8 factors which can make wine tasting all clear to you and to be able to make the right choice.

Free taste

For one to know how it feels, one must endure it first. That is why, whenever there are free tasting of wine within your area, grab that once in a lifetime opportunity. Events like these usually advertise good tasting wines which are offered cheaper compared to other brands. You local wine store can host evening sessions of wine gatherings. Through this, you are expanding your knowledge regarding the various types of wines.

Educate yourself

If you know nothing about wine, better ask someone to do it for you or else, you can just spend a sum on something that has a similar taste with polluted water. Read about the different kinds of wines which are assured to tickle your taste buds. There are tons of books readily available to help you gain knowledge on some of the most reputable wines.

Depend on dependable sources

If you have the money for it, you can just go to wine establishments and ask for advice on the kind of wine that will suit your taste. Some of the elegant wine stores have services that will filter you with information about different kinds of wine. You will find yourself inside a cellar that’s full of wine laid horizontally on compartments that prevents that wine from being exposed to heat and light.

Watch out for bad advertisements

As much as possible, do not go for commercialized wines because these are usually poor in quality and you’ll get lesser in taste. Do not settle for wines bragging about their labels because these can turn out to be just gimmicks. It is still best that you go for those local wine stores for they have some of the most exquisite wines not available anywhere.

Be aware of the importer

Wine bottles which are imported are required by the law to have certain shipping information printed at the back of every bottle.

Be an avid wine drinker

Sometimes, all you need to do is try it. To be able to determine the right kind of wine which completes your taste buds, you just have to make wine tasting your hobby. Frequent drinking can indeed put you in a lot of spending but if you have the amount for it, then go for the idea. You don’t need to use up the entire bottle.

A glass of wine is enough for you to identify the kinds of wine which tastes superb.

Camping Anyone?

August 20th, 2009

So you are thinking about going camping. There are different camping styles or themes, so consider carefully which one is suitable for your situation. Here are the five most common camping styles.
1. The cabin camper. This is a hybrid of indoors and outdoors where the campers stay mainly in a cabin or RV but still have some limited exposure to the outdoors through short hikes or even a one night sleep out. They may have some type of boat attached to their RV or even bikes. Some may scoff at this type of camping as it really does not get into the outdoor life that much. However, if you have children this may be a great style for you.

2. The second camping theme is similar to the one above but the main difference here is that the RV becomes the main sleeping place and affords more mobility so the camper does not stay in one place too long. This type of camping can be enhanced by boating, hiking or biking, or even hunting.  Again, this is also suitable if you have smaller children or even older campers.

3. The third theme is basically the most popular and this is where instead of a RV, the family vehicle is used and people actually sleep outdoors in tents and gather around camp sites. Again, this theme allows for other activities such as boating, hiking, biking, and hunting. This one is great for exploring and experiencing the outdoors.

4. The fourth theme is one of the more extreme ones and it is backpacking. Instead of a RV or the family car, your main mode of transportation is walking and hauling everything you need for the camp on your back. This camping theme really restricts your activity and so you are more likely to be doing pure camping due to the level of manual effort involved in just the transportation element. If you choose this style, be sure that you are physically fit and be prepared to face exhaustion from time to time.

5. The fifth camping theme is a takeoff of the fourth, but is even more extreme. It involves backpacking but instead of camping at a predetermined destination, the goal is to move start from point A and finish up at point B while enjoying several camping sites in between. This can involve distances that take you across states or even borders and is really meant to be taken on by the physically fit. Choose this one carefully and plan well as you will encounter different conditions and situations.

So there you have it – different camping themes or types of camping.  Choose the best suit your situation and be sure to plan well. Camping can be great fun when approached with due care.
